Russia rattles sabre at Turkey talks

As delegates from six sovereign groups met at a plenary in Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire talks at Ankara, Turkey the Russia delegation, speaking last, started with the most disturbing Russian introduction… “Unfortunately,…”

And then proceeded to claim that Ukraine had started the now-three year old war by bombing the Donbas in 2014. Ukraine, then, the representative said, “began a war it could not win.”

Most accounts of the history of conflict between the two countries in fact mark the beginning of the war with the Feb. 2022 Russian invasion, not the Donbas action, which is part of what is called separately, “the Donbas war.”

“We have not started this war, but we will end it,” said the Russian representative to a room full of diplomats from the USA, Ukraine, China, EU (France, Italy, Germany) and Turkey.

The Russian diplomat proceeded to gather in newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump, praising the US for “electing a rational, peace-loving leader.”

This strong and aggressive foray stands in stark contrast to the opening statements put forth by the host country and each other delegation.

The meeting kicked off at noon, with about 100 people gathered, including a famed ambassador representing the UN Security Council, who greeted the group saying that UN New York eyes are watching the summit closely. Ambassador C., with a long tenure in Russia and Ukraine, greeted the delegates and laid out a realistic, yet possible goal of collaboration and respect for sovereignty and human rights.

Turkey’s representative welcomed the group and highlighted the country’s interesting and complex relationship to the U.S., the EU (of which Ukraine is not yet a part) and to Ukraine.

The USA stressed a need for a “swift” negotiation to put into place a “durable peace” based on “respect, security, sovereignty and cooperation.” Perhaps going a step too far with a MAGA hat and putting puzzle pieces in a still loading NATO map, the U.S. said, “Together we will make Europe Great Again.”

The EU, repped by individuals from France, Italy, Germany, stated that it wasnted to “reaffirm Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty and integrity” and said strongly that “Ukraine must be in any negotiations.”

Ukraine took the floor reiterating that it was glad to be there “under the auspices of the United Nations” for this “pivotal chapter.” It stressed “dialogue, resolution, peace.”

But Ukraine was firm, that it wants an “end of hostilities” that will preserve their right to olive an a |peaceful, sovereign nation.” Ukraine stated directly that it cannot sacrifice territory. Compromise “CANNOT mean negotiating” sovereignty and Ukraine will not, it stressed “abide violation of International Law.”

This presentation by Ukraine, speaking for itself at this simulation Summit on Russia-Ukraine ceasefire was pointed about no loss of territory, and pointed an accusatory finger toward the Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who has repeatedly argued that Ukraine is Russian territory and has been accused of war crimes in Russia’s abduction of Ukrainian children and targeting civilian hospitals.

The delegations are considering these openers and where to move next. KNN will be seeking specifics from the delegations in interviews and news conference.
